Iraqi Governing Council in Disarray
Source of Shi'ite Discontent?

First a little background on the council and who comprise it. From it inception they were not trusted by the Iraqi people.

In September of last year Bahr al-Uloum, quit the council, stating the handling of Najaf and America's killing one of the heads of an islamic movement as the reasons.

Now the council is behind the ceasefires, according to one source as well as meeting with al-sadr and again we hear talks of quitting - this time from Al-Yawer as well as other issues.

Originally this council, made up of cross-section of iraqi people (but not 60% shi'ite as the population is) was supposed to go away when the new democratically elected government assumes power. Inevitably, though, they began to discuss a way to keep themselves in power.

And here, I believe, is the source of the shi'ite discontent. Democratically elected the Iraq government should be shi'ite (since its 60% of the population). The council, however, is not.
